I didn't figure that into the story so it didn't impede my enjoyment, but I know from reading other historicals set in time periods I'm more familiar with how frustrating it can be to spot obvious gaffes.AnimeJunehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18229748454410488167noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7348815.post-5307206037167500762012-06-14T19:24:24.716-06:002012-06-14T19:24:24.716-06:00I have absolutely no clue, sorry! :(I have absolutely no clue, sorry! :(AnimeJunehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18229748454410488167noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7348815.post-51514475248655342662012-06-14T16:04:44.070-06:002012-06-14T16:04:44.070-06:00I liked the story, but the issues of adultery in i...I liked the story, but the issues of adultery in it are anachronistic. Adultery in biblical times and even by 70AD was defined as relations with a married woman. A man having relations with an unmarried woman, as both Yael and Shira were, was not adultery. Men were allowed multiple wives and concubines, and as long as they weren't having relations with someone else's wife, neither they nor the unmarried woman were committing adultery.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7348815.post-60055651668095424622012-03-15T20:42:49.124-06:002012-03-15T20:42:49.124-06:00There is certainly a good story here, but be ready...There is certainly a good story here, but be ready to accept the fact that it is almost always depressing in tone. The novel succeeds in creating a believable fictional story from a factual event from ancient Hebrew history and making the harsh realities (particularly the misogyny) of living in those times come alive for the reader. The mix of superstition, religious practices, and culture/customs of the time are woven into the plot and help one to understand the behaviors of the various characters. Pratical Magic is one of my all time favorite stories and I am pretty much willing to read anything by her... even though I also lean toward romance.
