Yes, he starts the novel with a hurtful, selfish action but he spends the rest of the novel redeeming himself - at the same time the audience learns just how much he's had to put up with. Mary Balogh has a great talent in portra...I agree! Mary Balogh has a great talent in portraying human nature and in creating three-dimensional characters. Because of that, things are not always what they seem on the surface, and even her villains can be sympathetic characters. I really admire her ability to set up plots that allow characters to behave in ways that seem un-redeemable, yet once the reader knows the whole story, the behavior is understandable on some level.
