I really do get the sense that she ran out of good ideas several years back (it might explain the paranormal stuff she's doing now). Her early work was better written and more original, and the characters far more interesting (e.g. Max in No True Gentleman, Helene in Beauty Like the Night, Bentley in The Devil You Know, Sidonie in The Devil to Pay).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7348815.post-70619523437560328242013-02-10T09:47:00.594-07:002013-02-10T09:47:00.594-07:00True - I really loved Tempted All Night. Too often they go to far.AnimeJunehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18229748454410488167noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7348815.post-61925935680931658312013-02-10T09:46:25.912-07:002013-02-10T09:46:25.912-07:00It was just so bizarre. She didn't explain the paranormal element at all - plus it seemed to really rip off Amanda Quick's Arcane series.AnimeJunehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18229748454410488167noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7348815.post-50305484720680761042013-02-10T08:21:10.728-07:002013-02-10T08:21:10.728-07:00I'd suggest going farther into Carlyle's b...I'd suggest going farther into Carlyle's backlist. Her earlier books, starting with My False Heart (her debut) up through The Devil to Pay, are much much stronger than pretty much anything she has published since. I think her deadlines may be too tight, and the vaguely paranormal direction she's gone in isn't helping. It's a pity, because when she's good, she really is pretty wonderful.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7348815.post-52089510026708957512013-02-09T21:12:33.314-07:002013-02-09T21:12:33.314-07:00Oh, yes. I won't even try any of its sequels.Maddie Grovehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12693042098959910876noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7348815.post-79772167800663182462013-02-09T09:55:30.765-07:002013-02-09T09:55:30.765-07:00I quite enjoyed Never Deceive a Duke! There's nothing offensively bad about it, but the hero's an absolute cipher and the heroine's not much more interesting. Also, I can barely remember anything about the plot. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought it was unremarkable.

Liz Carlyle is interesting to me, because she wrote my second-favorite romance ("Never Deceive a Duke"), plus a few others that I really love ("Tempted All Night," "Wicked All Day," and "The Devil You Know"), but she's disappointed me on a fairly regular basis. I've read a dozen of her books and I'd say five were a B-minus or lower. Maddie Grovehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12693042098959910876noreply@blogger.com
