They're not bad writers, but slow pacing and usually boring plots.

Willaful: I can see that, but a lot of it seemed to be of the "I'm doing this for her own good but I won't tell her so it'll be misconstrued as bad temper" variety.

Vorkosigrrl - again, I didn't mind the novel, and I mostly enjoyed this one, but I think I prefer writers with faster pacing.AnimeJunehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18229748454410488167noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7348815.post-4043765094610213942011-08-09T15:04:47.620-06:002011-08-09T15:04:47.620-06:00I swore off Jo Beverly a while ago. I don't remember the name of the book that broke the camel's back, but I know I felt her characterizations and plot devices were just not credible and I didn't enjoy them, so why bother?Vorkosigrrlnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7348815.post-430933038942827142011-08-07T22:08:42.022-06:002011-08-07T22:08:42.022-06:00much *better*much *better*Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7348815.post-32524528010904585112011-08-07T22:08:10.960-06:002011-08-07T22:08:10.960-06:00Hmmm. I see Francis as the "nice guy" who discovers, to his horror, that he's not actually all that nice. He in fact treats Serena like shit for awhile. (Admittedly she seriously wronged him and him getting blamed for it is just the mustard on the cake.) Having a deep-rooted suspicion of self-proclaimed nice guys, I thought it a wonderful character study and a much depiction of the "woman who hates sex, man who rescues her" scenario, which often drives me up the wall. -- willafulAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7348815.post-63967954443767983702011-08-07T17:44:14.787-06:002011-08-07T17:44:14.787-06:00"uneven, slow pacing and lots of Inner Whinin..."uneven, slow pacing and lots of Inner Whining."

This pretty much sums up every Beverly book I've read. Her writing is absolutely beautiful, but the stories always fall short because nothing HAPPENS.

And yet I still feel compelled to pick up one her books every once in a while.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
