And it's not only the language, although of course that's amazing - Julie Anne Long writes with very beautiful but not necessarily historical language but she manages to get her stories across very well.AnimeJunehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18229748454410488167noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7348815.post-68962304746452518452009-06-02T14:32:20.235-06:002009-06-02T14:32:20.235-06:00Barbara --> Thank you so much! I used to feel the same way about Georgette Heyer - there was a bit of hesitation about picking up an author so many people like. "What if I don't like it?" I experienced that trying to read "Master and Commander" by Patrick O'Brian, which turned into a DNF by page 100.

Vorkosigrrl --> Oh good! I was a bit worried when I read "False Colours." I don't have too many Georgette on my TBR, and it's for a really silly reason. I go to a bookstore, and I see all the GH books, but then I think, "the public library has ALL her books, for free, so I don't have to buy them" - but then I don't go to the library. -_-;; FAIL.

Now I will, though!AnimeJunehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18229748454410488167noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7348815.post-49646125683092254052009-06-02T14:29:27.034-06:002009-06-02T14:29:27.034-06:00Oh! False Colours is definitely a m'eh in my book, so don't let it discourage you. Even Heyer makes her missteps (avoid Cousin Kate at all costs).

She doesn't just write romances (not that there's anything wrong with that), but Romantic Comedies. Sooooo much harder, to get the comedy right. I've never seen ANYONE match her mastery of comic writing. Okay, maybe Janet Evanovich (Stephanie Plum series only -- I don't like her romances). And she can also do serious, now and again.

Truly, I can't believe the pallor of contemporary authors compared to Georgette Heyer. Her characters are always unique. They may be tropes now, but she's the one who made them up. She's groundbreaking. She's like Austen on steroids.

You could never confuse one of her characters with another. Hugo Darracott (The Unknown Ajax) could never be mistaken for Freddie (Cotillion) or Gareth (Sprig Muslin). You'd never confuse Mary Challoner with the ditzy Lady Hester (Sprig Muslin) or the quirky, courageous Leonie (These Old Shades). More faves: Faro's Daughter, Frederica, Venetia, Arabella, Friday's Child, The Grand Sophy (although I didn't care for the hero, the denouement is priceless), Black Sheep, A Lady of Quality, The Foundling (although the title character does wear on one, and the romance is slight, it has the world's most wonderful villain, Liversedge -- his pic is next to the definition of chutzpah).

I hope to see lots more reviews of her books here. (*sigh*) I love Georgette.Vorkosigrrlnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7348815.post-88434320071447976732009-06-01T12:25:08.181-06:002009-06-01T12:25:08.181-06:00Now this sound like my kind of book! I've seen her books, picked them up and for some numbnut reason put them back.

I'll defintely check for this one next trip to the bookstore.

LOL! You crack me up with your mini-recaps of events!!

Great review!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
